There are certain things while browsing the Internet which you want to do in lesser clicks. Some of those most common things while Internet surfing are
1. downloading video from the current web page, or
2. email the link of the current page to a friend using regular email client , or
3. stop the ‘hogging’ web page from taking away system resources, or
4. do a Google search across the current site which doesn’t provide a search engine.
How about performing each of them and many more activities with a web page in a single click or two. Not bad!
To do such interesting things with a web page, you would require bookmarklets. Bookmarklets contain tiny pieces of programming code( also known as JavaScript). To get started, drag this sample blummy bookmarklet to your browser toolbar.
Blummy is a multifunctional bookmarklet and saves screen real estate otherwise you need to drag each bookmarklet individually on the toolbar. Here all your bookmarklets are stored under a single bookmarklet. All your bookmarklets are stored online and you have the convenience of accessing them from anywhere. You can choose from among the most popular blummlets(this is what they call bookmarklets) in order of their popularity on Blummy.com and also create your own blummlets. The list of bookmarklets I have found to be really useful:
[Not all of the given bookmarklets can be found on blummy. You can create your own blummet by copying the underlying links from here or simply drag the links to your bookmarks toolbar as per your convenience.]
1. All-In-One Video Bookmarklet -available here
This download videos from popular video sites: Youtube, Metacafe, Google Video.
Get the download link of videos from above sites right inside your mail account. You may think of using a disposable email id something like yournamevideos@mailinator.com.
3. GmailThis
Gmail the current web page link along with title and the selected text.
Shortens the long URL so that link doesn’t break in email or IM.
Useful when the site you are viewing doesn’t provide a search engine.
6. BugMeNot
Bypass the registration using borrowed free website logins.
7. Remove Bloat
Strip out bloaters like Java applications, Flash, music, and third-party iframes from a ‘heavy’ web page.
This bookmarklet rewrites all URLs on cached web page with links pointing to one stored in Google cache.
Deprived of bandwidth…? and site is taking forever …to… load?? Use this bookmarklet to open web page in text only mode.
Also, look for the bookmarklets to find the Google page rank of a web page or to find who is linking back to a particular web page since these are very useful to get some idea of the credibility of a web page.
More bookmarklets available at Jesse’s Bookmarklet Site and cybernet.
